Building an Accessible Vevox: Our Ongoing Commitment to Inclusivity

In 2018, the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations sparked a wave of conversations about digital accessibility. The UK Government’s regulations required all public service websites and apps to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards - by September 2020 for websites and June 2021 for mobile apps.

At Vevox, these conversations prompted us to look inward. We began by identifying and addressing some immediate 'quick win' accessibility issues. However, it soon became clear that achieving true accessibility compliance would require a deeper transformation of our platform’s architecture.

From frameworks to feedback: Building an inclusive platform

In 2019 and 2020, we selected a new UI framework and began the comprehensive task of rebuilding both the Vevox app and the Vevox dashboard. During this process, we engaged in valuable conversations with our university partners. Many institutions were navigating similar challenges, striving to ensure both their own systems and those of their suppliers were compliant with accessibility regulations. These discussions fostered shared learning and a collective commitment to creating accessible digital experiences.

Transparency and accountability

A major milestone in our journey was the creation of our first Accessibility Statement and Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) in 2019. This initial VPAT focused on the Vevox mobile app used by students, however we recognized that accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time task. Since then, we’ve adopted a practice of annual accessibility assessments, ensuring continual progress and transparency.

Our VPATs have evolved to cover the entire Vevox platform - including the dashboard - and reflect updated guidelines like WCAG 2.2 AA and Section 508 standards. We’ve also made accessibility education a core part of our development and design processes, ensuring new features are designed with inclusivity in mind.

Accessibility beyond the platform

With Vevox’s highly interactive nature, accessibility isn’t just about technology - it’s also about people. Many aspects of accessible experiences depend on session hosts (e.g., lecturers and presenters) using Vevox thoughtfully. That’s why we’ve created an 'Accessibility in Vevox' article on our help site, offering practical tips for presenters. Topics include best practices for using screen readers, keyboard navigation, countdown timers, colour use and providing alt text for custom images.

Looking ahead

Our journey towards greater accessibility continues. Our next annual review and VPAT update is scheduled for July 2025, and we remain committed to enhancing inclusivity across the Vevox platform. We welcome feedback from our customers as we work towards making Vevox an even more accessible and user-friendly experience for everyone.

Stay tuned for updates on our accessibility initiatives as we move forward together!
